Serena Williams won the Olympic gold medal in the Women’s Singles at London 2012, adding the title to, well, everything else she has won in her long career.
Williams didn’t just beat Sharapova, she destroyed her, winning 6-0, 6-1. The gold never looked in doubt, with Williams dominating from beginning to end.
Having already completed a career grand slam by winning all of the major tennis titles, this Olympic win means she has completed a golden slam, which only Steffi Graf has ever done before.
Williams is clearly one of the best players, if not the best player, to have ever played the game. And now we need her to retire so that another name gets a chance to be etched on the trophies.
