Stargate started as a book, then became a film, and then became a hugely successful television franchise spanning several shows. Stargate SG-1 lasted ten seasons, Stargate Atlantis lasted five, and there’s even an animated series called Stargate Infinity.
And now comes the latest entry: Stargate Universe, which premiered last night in the U.S. and Canada. This preview trailer video makes me think it’s like Star Trek: Voyager meets Lost In Space. A little generic maybe but not a bad combination.
This time, the main characters are transported through a Stargate not to home but to an ancient spaceship called Destiny. It’s located on the other side of the universe and the on-board Stargate will not dial home.
So, we see the crew’s attempts at getting home, interspersed with trips to neighboring planets through the Stargate. It’s like SG-1 only based on a spaceship rather than Earth.
