Steven Spielberg is regarded as one of the best directors of our generation. But according to cult film maker Terry Gilliam, Spielberg may be unworthy of this honor.
In this video, Gilliam puts forward a very interesting argument about film as entertainment versus film as art. The work of Spielberg tends to fall into the former category, even when he’s tackling heavy subject matter like the holocaust or the abuse of black women in the South.
Entertainment isn’t a bad thing, but Gilliam argues that it isn’t worthy of the slavish praise the world bestows upon it. Perhaps it’s just sour grapes because he’d love Spielberg’s big bucks, or perhaps he has a point.
