It’s the 4th of July, Independence Day for all those people in the United States. It’s a time to commemorate breaking away from British rule, and celebrating being American and all that means.
However, what are Americans really celebrating on this day, which has become more a commercially-controlled chance for a barbecue and piss-up? As this guy suggests, most countries around the world are as, if not more, free as the present-day United States.
Seriously, it’s not as if I in the UK, or people in France, Germany, Sweden, Australia, Japan, or countless other countries around the world are living under dictatorial government rule. We just don’t spend one weekend a year waving flags and shouting about the fact.
I admit to getting annoyed by American Independence Day every year. Not only do I get messages on Facebook and Twitter wishing me a happy 4th of July when, for me, it’s exactly the same as 4th of June, but the Internet also comes to a grinding halt. Which isn’t ideal.
