Christmas is a Christian holiday, right? Well, sort of.
It actually had its origins in pagan traditions. With Romans celebrating Saturnalia to mark the end of the harvest, and Europeans celebrating Yule to mark the birth of the sun.
Christians then hijacked these pagan traditions, and, more importantly, the timing. But even they couldn’t stop people behaving badly in the middle of winter.
The Puritans who sailed to America actually banned Christmas because of the debauchery that it was associated with.
It wasn’t until the 19th century, when more immigrants flooded in from all over Europe and beyond, that the real American Christmas started to take shape.
The ultimate message of this video is to just let people celebrate Christmas however they want, rather than worrying about the modern-day disconnect between Christianity and Christmas.
