The Singing Nun – ‘Dominique’ Video | Jeanine Deckers, Soeur Sourire Performs

33 sec read

This video shows a funky 1980s version of Dominique by The Singing Nun. Otherwise known as Soeur Sourire (Sister Smile), she reached number one in the U.S. music charts with the original version of this song.

I must admit to never having heard of The Singing Nun until today but she’s been thrust back into the news again due to the movie based loosely on her life from 1966. The film is backing the news because it stars Ricardo Montalban, who recently died at the ripe old age of 88.

The real-life story of Jeanine Deckers (The Singing Nun’s real name) is actually really interesting. After finding fame with Dominique, she left the sisterhood and became a lesbian… quite a lifestyle change.

The story ended in tragedy with both Deckers and her partner, Anna Pécher, committing suicide over financial difficulties. But she has left us with some sweet songs, although this massacred disco version isn’t one of them.
