Country music is without a doubt my least favorite genre of popular music, although Jazz runs it a close second. And this video does more than words ever could in explaining why I dislike it so much.
The song is called Elvira, as if you couldn’t guess from the lyrics of the song, which repeat the name over and over. And the group are called The Oak Ridge Boys, surely the ugliest boy band this side of the Mississippi.
The Oak Ridge Boys seem to consist (from right to left) of a man who’s wandered on stage from a 1970s porn film, a man having a stroke live on stage, that crazy guy who lives alone in the woods, and a businessman whose only reason for being in the group is his ludicrously deep voice.
The crowd seems to like it though, which makes me worry about your average American’s taste in music. Then again, this was the eighties, and music in the UK wasn’t much better. And the fashions? They were even worse.
