June 4, 1989 is a date that will always be remembered for the Tiananmen Square Massacre. Chinese students and workers protested against the government and its communist regime, and the authorities responded with lethal force.
The most famous footage of the historical event is of the lone protester standing in front of a line of military tanks, refusing to move even with the threat of being run over. But there was a lot more happening besides that as well.
This video shows a BBC News report from the event, where intrepid reporter Kate Adie is right in the thick of the action. Hundreds, if not thousands, of Chinese citizens were killed in order to stop the protests, a shameful act by the Chinese authorities.
The protests may have failed to overthrow the government but they did change the mindset of the country somewhat and China has opened up massively in the last two decades. Which is why the Tiananmen Square Massacre should be commemorated around the world.
