This video shows Tim Minchin, comedian and songwriter extraordinaire, performing Nothing Ruins Comedy live at the Royal Albert Hall in London. He is even backed by a full orchestra.
I have mixed feelings about Minchin. He’s clearly very talented, and as in this video when he focuses on the music he’s fantastic. But I don’t find him particularly funny otherwise.
When he steps out from behind the piano and attempts more traditional stand-up I feel like I’m looking at a show-off who needs the strange haircut and weird, beady little eyes to have an impact.
But this song is great. The lyrics are spot on, and the fact Minchin admits the reasons for switching to arenas says a lot about his character. Unlike, say, Peter Kay and Lee Evans. They’re funnier, but just less honest and upfront.
