There’s one rule in Idol competitions around the world: if you want to stand out, change things up. A-ha’s pop smash “Take On Me” will simply sound cheesy if you give it full retro treatment, but give it a classical makeover and it becomes a haunting love ballad.

Toby Moulton is Australian Idol’s elder statesman at 30. With that maturity comes an understanding of music that makes any risk a little more calculated. He knew this would work, and it did.

The arrangement was the perfect showcase for his stunning falsetto, and that sensitive side which makes the girls swoon. In a week of fairly mediocre performances, Toby smashed it out of the park.
