Venus Williams was supposedly a shoe-in to win the match, and a fair bet to win the Ladies Championship at Wimbledon for the sixth time in her career.
But no, as she’s been knocked out by relative unknown Tsvetana Pironkova, currently 80 places behind Williams in the official rankings. Prionkova has made a name for herself today, even though it’s a name not easy to remember.
The Bulgarian Pironkova beat Venus in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, and the whole match only lasted one hour and 25 minutes. Which is a long way off the record 11 hours and 5 minute match last week between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut.
Did Williams just have an off day or is this the start of the end for the player most deem to be the best female tennis champion who has ever played the game? Either way, Pironkova deserves her moment of glory.
