The No campaign will tell you that AV is near impossible to understand. It’s too difficult for us proles to get, so we’d better stick with what we know. Absolute codswallop, as Dan Snow demonstrates in this video.
For those not aware, The U.K. is deciding whether to switch from a first-past-the-post system to an alternative voting system on May 5. The Yes and No campaigns are working hard for everyone’s vote.
AV isn’t complicated in any way: Rather than voting for one candidate and seeing them elected if they beat the other candidates by percentage, AV means you rate all candidates in order and the lowest gets knocked out. Subsequent rounds see the votes recounted with people’s next choices until one candidate gets over 50 percent of the vote. Simple, and surely fairer than the current system.
Don’t be put off by the scaremongering No campaigners. AV is simple, fair, and would mean more of us would get to have a say in who is running our country. I fail to see the negatives.
