“The 19-year-old gunman who shot dead at least 17 people at a Florida high school wore a gas mask and set off a fire alarm so students would run into hallways.
“US officials have named the arrested gunman as Nikolas Cruz, an expelled former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who had raised flags with classmates for his violent tendencies.
“The school in Parkland, north of Miami, was placed in lockdown when the gunfire began about 2.30pm Wednesday local time (6.30am AEDT).
“Senator Bill Nelson of Florida says the shooter in the attack wore a gas mask and had smoke grenades.
“The Democrat said in an interview with CNN that he had been briefed on the attack by the FBI.”
