“Now that we’re getting it, the movie arrives in what is an incredibly challenging time for movies that aren’t based on an exceptionally well-known IP.
“Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets may have been based on a groundbreaking French comic book, and Andrew Stanton’s John Carter was based on the literary series that helped define modern sci-fi/fantasy tropes.
“But neither film clicked to the extent required for their copious production budgets.”
