“The death toll in an attack on a mosque in Egypt’s north Sinai region has risen to 235, after Islamist militants set off a bomb and opened fire on people attending prayers, state media says.
“No group has claimed responsibility for the assault but it was the deadliest yet in the region, where for three years Egyptian security forces have battled an Islamic State insurgency that has killed hundreds of police and soldiers.
“State media showed images of bloodied victims and bodies covered in blankets inside the Al Rawdah mosque in Bir al-Abed, 40 kilometres from the North Sinai provincial capital of el-Arish.
“A bomb exploded at the mosque as Friday prayers were finishing, then dozens of gunmen set up positions outside the mosque with jeeps and opened fire from different directions as people tried to escape, witnesses said.”
