“Torrential rain, high winds and lightning brought parts of Sydney to a halt on Tuesday night, while some towns in the Blue Mountains were blanketed in snow.
“The State Emergency Service was close to using boats to rescue 12 people on a Canberra to Sydney train late on Tuesday night, before aborting the exercise because the water flooding the rail line was too choppy.
“And rail authorities had organised a plan to close the entire T2 Airport and East Hills line on Wednesday morning, before a late break in the weather allowed them to open the lines for the commute.”
