“The situation around Hawaii’s erupting Kilauea Volcano continued to worsen over the weekend as lava crossed a coastal highway on the southeast end of the big island and reached the ocean where it creates a whole new type of other-worldly hazard.
“Meanwhile, the first injury tied to the eruption was reported when a man was hit by lava “spatter” that shattered his leg.
“The eruption of Kilauea has been impacting the island on multiple fronts for over two weeks now.
“Erupting fissures in the volcano’s eastern rift zone have destroyed dozens of structures, forced evacuations of nearly 2,000 residents and sent molten rock into the sea where it forms lava haze or “laze” that sends hydrochloric acid and steam filled with fine glass particles into the air.”
