There is absolutely nothing like potato salad to remind me of warm days in the park, celebrating Memorial Day in honor of my grandfather and his twin brother who fought in World War Two.
Later in my life, Memorial Day became about honoring the fallen soldiers by traveling around to the cemeteries with the band.
Still, I prefer to think of the potato salad. Because those are the happy memories, and I prefer to celebrate the lives that were instead of mourn them.
