“Thousands of Irish expats from across the globe have mobilised through social media and crowd funding to take part in the country’s abortion referendum.
“The hashtag #hometovote, first used for Ireland’s 2015 gay marriage referendum, has been re-used by Irish citizens based overseas to share their journeys back home to have their say in the vote on whether or not to repeal the Eighth Amendment.
“Polling stations were open until 10pm on Friday, with many rushing from airports to have their say.
“An exit poll conducted for newspaper The Irish Times projected the Yes vote winning by a large margin — 68 per cent to 42 per cent — to change the constitution to legalise abortion.”
