“What’s to be done with Chris Hemsworth? The titan from Oz has, of course, done well as the hammer-wielding god Thor in approximately 600 Marvel films.
“But past that lucrative iconography, Hemsworth has, improbably—given his looks and, yes, talent—struggled to find his place in the movie star firmament.
“He’s done techno thriller (Blackhat, big bomb), comedy (Ghostbusters, not great), historical drama (Rush, respected but little seen), historical epic (In the Heart of the Sea, huge bomb), and an attempt to launch a new franchise offshoot (Men in Black: International, whoops).
“He’s been good in all of those things, but the movies stalled, losing money and going unseen, in stark contrast to the unending slot machine clatter of the Avengers universe.”
