“The family of Jill Messick—Rose McGowan’s onetime manager and a former executive at Miramax—issued a firm but heartbreaking statement to The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday, just one day after Messick died by suicide.
“Messick had been pulled into McGowan’s public battle with Harvey Weinstein (the actress claims Weinstein raped her; he denies it), after the actress said in an interview with The New York Times that she told Messick about the alleged rape—and her manager had essentially done nothing to support her.
“In January, Weinstein’s lawyer released an old e-mail from Messick that appeared to dispute McGowan’s claim.
“In the statement, Messick’s family explains her side of the story, accusing McGowan of releasing “slanderous statements” about her former manager, and urging the press to report out #MeToo accusations more carefully.”
