“Singapore’s first prime minister and the man widely credited with the city state’s economic success, Lee Kuan Yew, has died after spending several weeks in a critical condition.
“Mr Lee, 91, had been receiving treatment for severe pneumonia at Singapore General Hospital since February 5.
“The government said his condition worsened due to an infection.
“The veteran politician served as prime minister from 1959, when Singapore gained self rule from colonial ruler Britain, until he stepped down in 1990.
Although he had receded from the public and political scene, his health had been closely monitored.
“He was still seen as an influential figure for the country’s current government, led by his eldest son Lee Hsien Loong.”
