“As investigators determine how an encounter between a tiger and a Palm Beach Zoo keeper turned deadly, experts say a killing, although rare, is not out of the question even when strict safety protocols are followed.
“Stacey Konwiser, 37, a lead keeper who specialized in tiger care and conservation, was severely injured Friday afternoon in a behind-the-scenes area of the zoo where the wild cats eat and sleep.
“The male Malayan tiger that attacked her has not been involved in any prior incident at Palm Beach Zoo, spokeswoman Naki Carter said.
“Konwiser was flown to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead Friday afternoon. The tiger that killed her remained at the zoo Saturday recovering from tranquilizers administered during the attempt to rescue the woman.”
