“North Korea said that it conducted a “test firing of a new kind” of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Friday, according to the government-run KCNA news agency.

“Japan warned on earlier on Friday that the missile had the potential range to reach the US mainland.

“KCNA claimed that the “new” missile was a Hwaseong-17, and said that it launched from Pyongyang International Airfield and flew a distance of 999.2 km (621 miles).

“The state news agency also published multiple still images of leader Kim Jong Un, who reportedly oversaw the launch.

“The ICBM was launched around 10:15 a.m. local time from the Sunan area of the North Korean capital Pyongyang. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said. The US said it was a “brazen” violation of UN resolutions.”
