There is overwhelming evidence that wearing a face mask helps prevent the spread of COVID-19. However, a new study suggests that not all face masks are created equal.
A new study by the Duke University School of Medicine looked at the effectiveness of the various masks people are wearing (or refusing to wear) in public.
The majority of masks DO stop you expelling droplets and potentially spreading the virus. However, fleece neck gaiters actually make things worse.
The lesson here is not that face masks are ineffective, it’s that you need to choose your face mask well. Which means either a standard surgical mask or a homemade cotton mask. Just not a neck gaiter.
