We have had the winter solstice for another year, at least in the northern hemisphere. But what exactly is the winter solstice and why do we mark this annual occasion?
This video shows Brian Cox explaining the basics of the winter solstice in his series Wonders Of The Solar System.
The winter solstice is the moment when the Sun is tipped furthest away from the Earth. Which is why the northern and southern hemisphere experience the solstice six months apart.
This is important because without that angle Earth wouldn’t experience seasons. And I don’t know about you but I like the fact the weather changes throughout the year.
