If you have ever visited London, or even just seen footage of it on television or in movies, you may have wondered why some of its building have such odd shapes.
This is such a phenomenon, especially of late as the buildings have reached new heights, that Londoners have given the buildings nicknames, including the Shard, the Gherkin, and the Cheesegrater.
Now, thanks to this video by Tom Scott, we know why some of the buildings are shaped in such a way.
It’s all to do with sightlines, or protected views, which ensure certain areas of the city are visible for miles around. Hence the need to build odd-shaped skyscrapers to stay within the bounds of the law.
