Over the last 25 years or so, the corporations that control mass media have dropped from around 50 to just six. America now has just Time Warner, Bertelsmann, Viacom, Vivendi, News Corporation, and The Walt Disney Company.
These six multinational corporations now control the vast majority of the media piped into each and every home in the States. Which clearly isn’t good for democracy and a wide range of different opinions.
This video takes an exhaustive look at the issues surrounding big media and how this situation came about. The conclusion drawn is that the current state of the media means we’re not guaranteed honest, truthful reporting.
I do, however, think the Internet is helping a great deal. There are now millions of amateur journalists and bloggers on the Web willing to report the news as it happens, and without spinning it to suit their own ends.
