NBC has already picked up the Will & Grace revival for a second season – and has ordered four more episodes for season one.
News of the renewal came during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour. The network has renewed the show for a 13-episode second season even though it hasn’t returned to the air yet.
NBC also ordered four more episodes for season one, bringing the episode total to 16.
Bob Greenblatt, NBC Entertainment chairman, revealed the news before the show’s panel kicked off at the tour.
All original cast members will return: Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes and Megan Mullally. Creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan are also back, and they will be joined by executive producer James Burrows., who directed every single episode of the original series.
Along with making new episodes, Mutchnick says they are also looking at options for streaming the original series.
“We are working on it, but it’s super-complex. There are a lot of parts to that,” he said.
As for the new series, the creators say they’re going to pretend the finale never happened. When the show said farewell in 2006, Grace (Debra Messing) married Leo (Harry Connick Jr.) and had a child named Laila. Will (Eric McCormack) was raising a son named Ben with his partner Vincent (Bobby Cannavale).
Will and Grace will return to the show as childless and unmarried. As for Jack (Sean Hayes) and Karen (Megan Mullally), Jack will return as Will and Grace’s neighbor and Karen will still live in her mansion. Everyone will have the same careers, and Jack will still be teaching his craft “Jackting.”
According to a report from EW, Harry Connick Jr. will make a brief appearance as Leo in the new series.
Will & Grace will premiere on September 28 on NBC.
