14 year old Luke from Yorkshire turned up to his first X Factor audition and delivered a rousing performance (at least in my eyes) of the Rod Stewart classic Maggie May. But the judges, especially Simon Cowell, weren’t impressed.
So they gave him 24 hours to go away and practise a more poppy song, which would better suit his young voice. He came back and sang the chorus of You Raise Me Up only didn’t sing as well as he had the first time.
It was a bit touch and go whether this kid would get through to next week’s boot camp, but he just managed it, with Dannii Minogue casting the deciding vote and inexplicably ending up as his saviour.
I feel this was a bit staged as he should have gone through the first time anyway. It seems like they needed the second chance saloon storyline to add a bit of tension and warm the audiences hearts at home.
Ah well, he got through in the end, and good luck to him. Given the right mentor and songs to sing, I think he could go far and potentially even win it… shoving Cowell’s words down his throat as he goes!
