Russian track and field star Yelena Soboleva will be joining the ranks of those making their Olympic debuts this year.
Having broken her own indoor world record in the 1500m – the event she is competing in at the Olympics – at the Russian Indoor Championships in February 2008, she is a strong competitor for the gold.
Though results that disappointed her and prompted her to quit in 2004 caused her to return home, it wasn’t long after that she met Matvei Teliatnikov, who convinced her to return to training with his group in Moscow.
She has never forgotten the month she spent resting, though, and continues to rest for 30 days each year at the end of the season.
