The 2009 Tony Awards were held on Sunday night, with the annual awards ceremony producing its usual array of magnificent performances and deserving winners. But there’s one incident which has grabbed more attention than all the others put together.
The musical version of Billy Elliot may have won ten awards, and Angela Lansbury may have won the fifth Tony of her career, but those achievements are nothing compared to the beauty of seeing Bret Michaels getting clotheslined by the stage backdrop.
The incident came at the end of Poison’s performance at the awards. The rest of the band hit their cue and exit behind the rapidly dropping stage. Michaels, on the other hand, is too busy milking the crowd for adoration and walks straight into it.
He bangs his head, falls over, and then the camera unfortunately pulls away from the aftermath. I would have loved to have seen what happened next. A spokesman has since confirmed Bret Michaels is OK, and hasn’t broken his nose. Hi ego may well be damaged though.
