This past weekend saw Serena Williams making the headlines for losing her shit during the final of the U.S. Open. She claimed the umpire was against her, and eventually lost the match to Naomi Osaka.
Now, a cartoonist has stolen the headlines, and the debate has moved onto whether his cartoon depicting the incident is racist, sexist, or both.
Personally, I don’t think it’s sexist. He was depicting an incident that actually happened. However, it’s hard to argue against it being at least a little bit racist.
I understand caricatures, but this just looks like a cartoon of a black person drawn in the 1800s. And then there’s Osaka drawn as a blonde white woman. Oh dear.
