Today sees the annual Mermaid Parade being held on Coney Island. The 2010 event looks set to be as fun and frivolous as the 2009 Mermaid Parade, which can be seen in the above video.

The Mermaid Parade is designed to celebrate Coney Island and its history, as well as the sun, sea, and sand. It’s held at this time of year to also welcome in the start of summer, although it looks as though it was a rainy affair last year.

To take part, people dress up as mermaids (naturally), and other sea creatures. Celebrities who have taken part in previous years include Moby, Queen Latifah, and Harvey Keitel.

The Mermaid Parade has been held since 1983, with a 21-and-up Mermaid Parade Ball added 8 years ago.
