I’m beginning to think Netflix is making this stuff because they know we love a good roasting.
“The latest version of Dangerous Liaisons – now on Netflix – takes the epistolary letters comprising its source material, Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ novel Les liaisons dangereuses, and replaces them with Instagram stories.
“If this raises your ire, then you’re probably, shall we say, of a certain vintage, but how else would one update an 18th-century story of letters for modern-day teenagers?
“Maybe the question is whether such a thing should have been attempted at all – this film has tough acts to follow in the original book, Christopher Hampton’s 1985 stage adaptation and and the lusciously nasty 1988 Stephen Frears film it inspired, in which Glenn Close and John Malkovich helped transform the traditionally uptight period costume drama into an act of decadent sinfulness.”
