“Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) on Wednesday sustained bipartisan criticism for baselessly claiming “fake Trump protesters” and “agents provocateurs” were among the groups that attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
“Johnson has echoed some of Trump’s unfounded claims that the election was stolen, even launching hearings to investigate them. Johnson had initially been one of a dozen senators planning to vote to uphold objections to Biden’s Electoral College victory, but he and several others backed down following the violence gripped the Capitol.
“Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), the No. 4 Senate Republican, defended Johnson’s comments, calling it the “dramatically different view of the day” but arguing it’s “certainly not harmful for Sen. Johnson to have his time on the committee to present the information he thinks needs to be presented,” according to pool reports.”
