“It’s not often that a company makes as big of a bet as the one that Tesla is placing on the electric car that it is due to unveil Thursday.
“After showing it can succeed in producing luxury long-range electric cars, Tesla CEO Elon Musk is due to unveil its Model 3, its first mass-market car, at an evening event in the suburb of Hawthorne.
“At an expected price tag of about $35,000, it’s still going to come in closer to compete more directly with Acura, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and other popular luxury brands in the market today. Yet it will come in at about half the price of Tesla’s current sedan, the Model S.
“The Model 3 will test whether a much broader swath of the American car market is ready to make the leap to electrics.”
