Oh noes, run for your lives, there’s a dirty great wrecking ball out of control in New York!
There’s actually not, no matter what some video descriptions will have you believe. Instead, this clip shows a scene being shot for The Other Guys, a new comedy cop movie starring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell.
When I first saw this video I was gobsmacked. It looked as though a passing car had indeed been smashed in the side by a wayward wrecking ball. However, watching a better quality version of the clip shows the truth.
The car sets off from a standing start, you can see the lever used to flip the car, and you can see the rope attached to the wrecking ball to control its descent. Mystery solved.
The only intriguing thing left about this video is the bus which swings in front of the camera right after the hit. It has a poster advertising Astro Boy on the side, leading some to suggest this is a viral advertising effort.
